Leaf miner

Leaf miner: resistance management advice

Leaf miners are members of Diptera group like flies and mosquitoes. The adult fly will create small sucking spots in the leaf. When you see such symptoms, you should be prepared as the larvae will soon follow. These larvae ‘mine’ the leaf and create corridors in the leaf and have the potential to create a lot of damage in the crop.

Control can be achieved by combining parasitic wasps and chemical controls. Good application techniques to ensure that the plant protection product end up in the right place and sufficient active substance can be absorbed.

To prevent a crop developing resistance it is important that you alternate between the different active ingredients. It is important to pay attention to the mode of action the product has. Rotation of products is a key strategy but it’s important those products have different IRAC codes, as this can reduce further resistance development.
